This longitudinal study has two aspects: community trauma recover and tobacco control.  While the specific projects vary from year to year, the goal is the same – to use the tools of anthropology and public health to explore the effectiveness of tobacco control measures and examine how this community responds to disasters.  It is a high altitude site (~11,000 feet) and is thus physically challenging.  Students are expected to work closely as a team to reach project goals. Findings are presented back to the residents for comment and insight.  Upon their return to Rochester students are expected to prepare data for conference presentations in Rochester or other venues.
